Dark Night Review by Director Kevin Smith

This is a review posted by Kevin Smith. I really hope it lives up to the hype. Without giving anything away, this is an epic film (and trust me: based on the sheer size and scope of the visuals and storytelling, that's not an overstatement). It's the "Godfather II" of comic book films and three times more earnest than "Batman Begins" (and fuck, was that an earnest film). Easily the most adult comic book film ever made. Heath Ledger didn't so much give a performance as he disappeared completely into the role; I know I'm not the first to suggest this, but he'll likely get at least an Oscar nod (if not the win) for Best Supporting Actor. Flick's nearly three hours long and only leaves you wanting more (in a great way). I can't imagine anyone being disappointed by it. Nolan and crew have created something close to a masterpiece.

Uncle Monsterface....

Uncle Monsterface is a sock puppet rock band from Brooklyn, New York. They sing the tales of Nintendo, Count Chocula, Gary Gygax (Dungeons and Dragons creator) and so much more. An Uncle Monsterface live show is full of, yes you guessed it sock puppetry. Props and multimedia videos are set to your favorite 80's cartoons or other random weirdness. They are on tour right now with Harry and the Potters and they have that same feel. They may not be the most gifted musically, but attending a live show will almost certainly put a smile on your face.

Rob Zombie revealed the first teaser conceptual artwork from his next film TYRANNOSAURUS REX via his official MySpace page! Not much is known about the mysterious project other then the fact that Zombie will write and direct TYRANNOSAURUS REX for The Weinstein Company/Dimension Films. A release date of August 28, 2009 has been penciled in.

The Image Fulgurator..... The End Of Photography

I viewed this story on Wired and I thought I would share It with you. First off, this invention is dangerous to anyone who loves photography and the freedom of art. Imagine going somewhere and taking a snapshot. Maybe you went to the aquarium, maybe a rock show. Later, when you view your pictures their is some kind of watermark which was never there before. This my friends is the Fulgurator. The device is a modified camera -- in this case, an old manual Minolta SLR. A flashgun fires through the camera in reverse, from the back. The flash picks up the image of a slide inside and projects it out through the lens and onto any surface.

The trick is in the triggering. The Fulgurator lies in wait until an unsuspecting photographer takes a picture using a flash. When the device's sensor sees this flash, it fires its own unit, throwing up an image which is captured by the hapless photographer's camera while remaining unseen by the naked eye. Now, imagine for a moment that an ad agency gets hold of this. You couldn't take a photograph of a tourist attraction or anything or a certain area ever again if they used these without worrying that some marketing crap or watermark would be pushed into your camera.

Absinthe making a comeback!

Absinthe or "The Green Fairy" as it is also known is a drink which is said to have psychedelic properties when consumed over time. Absinthe was finally made legal again in the US last year. They have had some variations of Absinthe around in the US, but none with Wormwood and the active levels of Thujone found in European brands which cause the hallucinogenic "effect" or so it is said. For years Absinthe was forbidden, because it contained Thujone, a potentially toxic compound.We now have genuine Absinthe in the Charlotte area if you know where to look.

Gawkagogo.

The other day I was sent this bizarre video of a UK based traveling comedy show called Gawkagogo. Usually, the show travels with the larger European concert festivals as a comedic midway featuring cartoon style costumes, weird puppetry, stage illusions and audience participation. It is in the same vein as The Jim Rose Circus, but instead of freaks it features bizarre comedy. Word is the production is coming to the US with a major traveling concert package next year.

Scum of the Earth....

After his 2001 album, ‘The Sinister Urge’, Rob Zombie took a break from making music and established himself as a competent horror film director. Eventually the former White Zombie front-man would return to music with ‘Educated Horses’ in 2006, but at the time it looked like he was heading to Hollywood for good. Naturally, his longtime friend and guitarist, Riggs, started up a new band to keep himself busy with. That band, Scum of the Earth, released their debut album, ‘Blah, Blah, Blah…Love Songs For The New Millennium’ in 2004 to mostly positive reviews. After a few lineup changes, Riggs and company released ‘Sleaze Freak’ in 2007. Now they are ready to once again embark across the U.S to fill your White Zombie type rock void.

Clive Barker movie in trouble..

Rumors are currently circulating that the new Clive Barker film The Midnight Meat Train will only be released on a limited basis. Early reviews of the movie have reported that this is Clive's best adaptation thus far and some are saying better than Hellraiser. Lionsgate, the fims distributor recently have had a corporate shake up and the new head is said to be sabotaging the previous head honchos projects. Lionsgate decision to "dump" Midnight Meat Train in as few screens as they are contractually required and then rush the film to DVD is based purely on INTERNAL POLITICS.

The Dollyrots

The Dollyrots are definitely a guilty pleasure punk band. The Dollyrots are one girl and two boys. They're a punk rock band but their CDs are very pop. Kelly the singer is sugar sweet but mischevious and might sucker punch you if you're dumb enough to try her patience. Which she has a lot of, if she hasn't been visiting with her friends Jack, Jim or Jameson. She likes to do girl things like grow plants and sew up her t-shirts and crochet and make strawberry cakes. But, she also likes to play her basses til they are sprinkled with blood and drives soo fast she's not allowed behind the wheel and is getting really good with the balisong she stole from her boss who used it as a letter opener.

Torche

Torche have been active on the scene since their 2005 debut album. More than just stoner rock Torche will please fans of Kyuss to Mastodon to punk. After Miami underground faves Floor disbanded after a decade, two full-length albums under their belts, singer/guitarist Steve Brooks and guitarist Juan Montoya were urged by a fan of Floor's to work with former Tyranny of Shaw drummer Rick Smith. Not so coincidentally, that fan just happened to be the owner of Robotic Empire Records, and before long, bassist Jon Nunez joined, the band Torche was born, and Robotic Empire wound up with a monster of a band in their hands.

First off, forget about where they are from and the label they are on. Forget about all the Viva La whatever and when you boil all that away what you have is a great band. This band will be huge in a matter of months and I can guarantee it. All the kids will be singing the songs off this album when it's finally ready to be unleashed. Chad Ginsberg of CKY produced and mixed the first single and you can check it out on the bands Myspace. Rumor is that they will be on the Viva La bands tour this Oct. with The Sounds. On a side note; Carl "the drummer" recently suffered a broken hand and is still recovering, but the man loves Leatherface and when the saw is family nothing can stop you. Breathtaking atmospherics and dark sensibilities deserved of being likened to The Cure's Disintegration... Vocalist Joseph E. Martinez deadpans a brooding style that clashes at the perfect angle with the swirling sounds that rise around his words. Without straying into anything too heavy, Junius manages to maintain an intense presence that is as stylish as Interpol but carries a sincerity and distinction not found in enough young acts. This band seems to have borrowed just enough from previous decades to build and shape something all its own.

Too Much Energy..

I am a huge fan of energy drinks and have tried lots of them and up until this point Monster Energy Mocha Loca Coffee drinks are my favorite, but if you just want that rip and you want to throw taste out the window you won't find a stronger energy drink at the moment in the U.S than this. Wired X-344. SO, Red Bull…about 80 mg of caffeine…..Rockstar, 150, and Monster…well around 160. Wired X 394….yup, 394! It also has 3x more Taurine per can than Monster at almost 3000mg per 16oz. I can almost bet that someone will have heart palpitations and die from drinking too many of these, but if your on the go and love heart attacks in a can, by all means try it.

Wednesday 13..... Skeletons

'Skeletons' is the latest installment of horror rock from WEDNESDAY 13 and although the CD has been out for a few weeks ,I like to give a CD a few spins before I make up my mind to recommend something. Skeletons is darker and heavier than its predecessors. As with his other albums, this album also has great hooks and catchy lyrical content that would make any fan proud. This CD truly delves into Wednesday 13’s personal life – past, present and future – as well as his almost life ending depression and battle with alcohol. The new album in America is a self release Hot Topic exclusive and is selling really well. In Europe, you can find it on Demolition records. I am glad he went this route, because the last American label he was on did a terrible job at distribution for Wednesday's last CD. Wednesday has some dates with Type O Negative coming up , as well as another European leg to his never ending tour schedule. The Return of the Jelly...

Green Jelly or Jello (before they were forced to make the name change) make an extremly rare apperance to the Queen City. They were best known for the video of the Three Little Pigs which was a hit on MTV circa 92-93. The video fetured the voice of Tool's Maynard James Kennan who was once a member of the band for a brief moment. Musically, the band plays a set full of puppets, pyro, and punk.

There is going to be a full moon over Charlotte on Friday the 13th.Charles Band, founder of sci fi/horror movie studio Full Moon Features and whose 270 plus films has established him as one of Hollywood’s most successful and prolific cult movie impresarios, has announced that he will stage the 3rd incarnation of his FULL MOON HORROR ROAD SHOW this summer.This one night only show is a horror-palooza of sorts. Cult Horror Film Director Charles Band packs his shows to the brim with puppets, creatures and rare film clips. For horror movie fans and fans of the PUPPETMASTER film series, this event will feature unique interactive audience participations on stage, upcoming new release film trailers by Full Moon Features, surprise celebrity guest appearances, original puppet and doll auctions, hot chicks, unique merchandise and novelty items and live special effects demonstrations!!

Yes, that is Jay to your right and that is one of the awesome elements of the new Kevin Smith movie Zack and Miri Make a Porno. The plot taken from the movies official myspace site states: The story centers around two lifelong friends -- Zack and Miri -- who after finding themselves deep in debt enlist their friends to make a pornographic movie with the goal of earning some quick cash. The band is called Minipop. Hailing from San Francisco they don't fall into the huge shoegaze resurgance that the area is having at the moment. They are dreamy kind of like Eisley mixed with a faint hint of Mazy Star. Minipop sounds as fresh as ever thanks to the production work of Chris Manning (once a member of Jellyfish). My favorite track at the moment of the group is "Like I do."

25 Minutes To Go..

"A Shot Below The Bible Belt" is the latest offering from 25 Minutes To Go. This punk rock quartet hails from Lincolnton, Nc, but despite small town roots the band displays a big time sound. Raw energy and catchy hooks with a little bit of Social Distortion thrown in completes this recipe for rock goodness. They just got back from a tour, but you can still cath them live in the Queen City.
