This Belgian feature self-consciously and gleefully embraces every imaginable taboo in an aggressive yet evasive fashion. The story revolves around a strange request. Dries (Dries Van Hegen) is approached by three strangers who ask him to be their drummer. They are a damaged collection of men: violent, troubled, miserable, living in poverty and visiting all kinds of horrors on those who are close to them. Dries makes a cynical decision to enter their chaotic, ugly world and he manages, quite deliberately, to heighten the tension and trauma around him without ever being affected by it. Meanwhile, the band - renamed, at his suggestion, the Feminists - lurches towards its goal, playing in a rock'n'roll competition. Ex Drummer is a curious mixture of styles. Alongside its brutality, the film has all sorts of stylistic tricks and tics.
